The “Jomo karuta”, a Japanese card game depicting the history and geographical features of Gunma describes Takasaki as follows. Takasaki is one of Japan’s leading transportation hubs. Since ancient times Takasaki has formed the link between the Kanto and Shinetsu Regions, forming the crossroad between the Nakasendo and Mikuni Kaido Highways, the Kanetsu and Kita Kanto (formerly the Nagano shinkansen line) Expressways and the Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines. Following the large merger of cities in the Heisei Period, Takasaki became the largest city with the largest population in the prefecture, boasting a commercial function, attracting people, goods and information coupled with a stunning natural environment typified by the Haruna and Kurabuchi areas, drawing people to the city on business and to explore the local sights as one of the leading cities in the North Shinetsu Region.
